BIP Security Alert: Android Users

BIP Wealth has learned of a new malware campaign called Gooligan which is rapidly affecting certain Android operating systems. Currently, this malware has spread to over 1 million devices and is breaching over 13,000 new devices each day. Users’ devices are being breached by downloading one of many different malicious apps, then once hacked, the malware appears to give the attacker access to the users’ full Google suite of products, like Gmail. It is also capable of installing many other malicious applications which may further put your information at risk.

Although Google has been making a dedicated effort to address this problem and claims that the purpose of this malware is to promote apps not steal data, at BIP, we always encourage you to approach your internet security from a cautious and conservative approach. As such, we encourage you go to https://gooligan.checkpoint.com and use the tool provided to help determine if your account may have been compromised. If it has been compromised, you should consider doing the following:

  1. Perform a clean installation of your operating system This process may be complex, so you may consider finding a certified Android technician or your mobile service provider to discuss having your device “re-flashed.”
  2. As soon as you have reinstalled the operating system (but not before), it is recommended for you to change your Google account passwords.
  3. Let your Personal Wealth Advisor know, so we can take appropriate steps to safeguard your accounts with us.

As with any operating system, it is important to perform system updates regularly and timely to limit vulnerabilities. You can verify that the operating system is up-to-date under the settings of your Android device in the “About Phone / Tablet.”

We greatly appreciate the trust that you place in us. If you have any questions, please contact us and we will do all that we can to help.
